During this 90-minute Q&A, Andrew will talk about the inspiration behind his latest novel The Land in Winter (shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2025), his writing process, the authors that influence him and other learnings from his career as a novelist.
Andrew is the author of ten novels and has twice been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. He is known for atmospheric prose and deeply moving explorations of love and humanity. He deftly writes about any time and place – and can acutely portray the particulars of a historical or contemporary moment. This event will offer invaluable insights into the craft of writing literary fiction and what it takes to delve into the innermost thoughts of your characters.
The Land in Winter was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2025 and won the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction 2025 and the Winston Graham Historical Prize 2025. Set during Britain’s coldest winter, the severe ‘Big Freeze’ of 1962, the novel follows two young, newly married couples in England's West Country. They are forced to confront their secret desires, past traumas and the complexities of their marriages as lives unravel amidst violent blizzards and loneliness.

The most interesting and frequently asked questions will be curated and put forward to Andrew by CBC host Jack Hadley. This event will be ‘webinar style’ with Andrew and Jack appearing live on-screen, attendees will not appear on the screen however they will be able to post comments in a chat box.
Andrew Miller is the author of ten novels including Pure, Oxygen and The Land in Winter. Born in Bristol in 1960, he studied at Middlesex Polytechnic, the University of East Anglia (with Malcolm Bradbury, Rose Tremain and Lorna Sage) and at Lancaster University, where he completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor David Craig. He has been awarded the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, the Winston Graham Historical Prize, The James Tait Black Memorial Prize, The Grinzane Cavour, the International IMPAC, the Costa Book of the Year and the Highland Prize. His novels have also been shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
Jack Hadley has been part of the Curtis Brown Creative courses team for 10 years, helping run courses and mentoring programmes for writers at every stage of their journey. He has contributed to the production of over 30 online video-based writing courses. Jack has hosted hundreds of speaker sessions, masterclasses, and pitch events with authors including Kate Mosse and Kevin Barry; producers such as Liza Marshall and Julie Gardner; and leading publishers and agents including Felicity Blunt, Jonny Geller, Venetia Butterfield, and Charlotte Mursell.
